If the Notre Dame football team is missing Brian Kelly, they’re sure not showing it. Hours after officially naming Kelly’s ND defensive coordinator, Marcus Freeman, as the 30th head coach in school history, Freeman was re-introduced to his team.
And judging from the response, the 6th-ranked Irish are ecstatic to have him.

As the Irish gathered for a morning workout, strength coach Matt Balis briefly addressed the team.
“We’re extremely proud of you guys. Your focus. And your ability to lock in all week long…it was awesome to see, awesome to be a part of,” said Balis. “It shows who you are. Your DNA, your mental toughness, your physical toughness. The way you compete, the way you care about each other.”
Then, unable to cage his excitement any longer, Balis officially introduced Freeman to the team:
“Your brand new head football coach!”
Freeman then burst through the doors, arms in the air, pumping his fists and screaming “Let’s go!” Irish players instantly jumped to their feet and greeted their new coach with deafening cheers and applause.
Freeman bear-hugged four players before the team surrounded their 35-year-old first-time head coach and engulfed him in a huddle of hype. The entire Friday morning scene had vibes of a championship celebration — something still in play for Freeman and the Irish, who are 11-1.
