Urban Meyer Adds Former Power 5 Coach To His Staff

Urban Meyer is getting the band back together in Jacksonville -- well, sort of. The new Jaguars head coach is reportedly adding former Texas head coach Charlie Strong to his staff.

While most assumed Strong would come as the defensive coordinator, that apparently won't the case. Strong will be an assistant, and Brett McMurphy with Stadium believes it will be as the linebackers coach.

Strong has plenty of familiarity with Meyer. He was kept on as Florida's defensive coordinator when Meyer took over the head coaching position back in 2005, and remained there until he left to become Louisville's head coach in 2010.

He also coached the linebackers during his time with Meyer and the Gators, so he'll be taking a familiar role as well.

Strong had joined Nick Saban's program at Alabama as a defensive analyst for the 2020 season, and there was some speculation that he could become an on-field coach in Tuscaloosa in 2021. It doesn't look like that will happen, however.

The Jaguars have some talented players at linebacker. Once he was moved into a true off-ball role, things finally clicked for former second-round pick Myles Jack. In addition, Joe Schobert was a prize free agent signing prior to the 2020 season.

It looks like Strong will have a good group to coach in his first season as an NFL assistant coach.
