Trent Dilfer Shares Which Quarterback He Would Take At No. 3

It's the question everyone wants answered: which quarterback should the 49ers draft at No. 3 overall? We know Trevor Lawrence is going first to the Jaguars, and we think Zach Wilson is going second to the Jets.

That leaves Alabama's Mac Jones, Ohio State's Justin Fields and Trey Lance out of North Dakota State. It's a tough decision to make, but what happens at that pick will have a domino effect on how the rest of the first round plays out.

So, of course when OutKick founder Clay Travis gets a quarterback guru like Trent Dilfer on his radio show, he's going to ask for his opinion on the topic. Who would Dilfer take at No. 3, if he were the one making the call for San Francisco?

"If he were to ask me -- which he has not -- then I would say Justin Fields," Dilfer replied. "I think Justin Fields is an elite talent. He's not a good athlete, Clay, he's an elite athlete. He is a top one-percenter in the NFL as an athlete.

"He has the joint structure to be durable. He's got the horsepower to play well when he's banged up, late in games and late in the season. He's got the quarterback IQ, the acumen at a young age to handle a lot of offense. He's got the maturity to handle the bigness of the position. He's got an extreme work ethic ... I think he's an elite prospect. I don't see a flaw in his game."

Dilfer went on to say that he's given Fields the same draft grade he gave Trevor Lawrence, which is the highest grade for a quarterback since Andrew Luck. Quite the praise, right?

What's interesting about Dilfer's response though? Well based on reports, Shanahan and the 49ers aren't considering Fields at this time. Instead, the decision will come down to Mac Jones -- the odds-on favorite, according to FanDuel -- and Trey Lance.

If San Francisco does take Jones or Lance, Dilfer at least understands why -- even if he thinks Fields is a better, more elite prospect.

"If they take Mac Jones -- or if they take Trey Lance -- I can completely understand the why," Dilfer continued. "They're both really good prospects, really good players. They just may be looking to grow their offense a different direction.

"I think it's ice cream. We all like ice cream -- unless you're lactose intolerant -- but we all don't like the same flavors, buddy. I mean, you might be a rocky road guy, I'm a mint chip guy, the next guy might be a cookie dough guy. Ice cream is awesome. It's just what flavor of ice cream do you like the best."

Fair comparison to drive the point home.
