Todd Bowles Could Be In Line For Second Head Coaching Gig

Todd Bowles might get a second chance at being a head coach in the NFL. According to the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons both have an interest in interviewing Tampa Bay's defensive coordinator.

Garafolo tweeted this out on Saturday morning:

"The Lions have put in a request to interview Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles for their vacant head-coaching position, sources say. Interview not scheduled yet as the sides wait for the outcome of tonight’s game but Bowles expected to meet with Detroit and the Falcons."

There is no doubt that Bowles is a good defensive coordinator. With that said, there are still a few question marks about his ability as a head coach. Should he get another opportunity? Plenty of other failed first-time coaches have, so why not?

Bowles spent four seasons as the head coach of the New York Jets from 2015-18. His first squad got off to a great start (10-6), but the following three seasons saw a combined 14-34 (.292) record before his departure.

Since then, Bowles has become the defensive coordinator for the Buccaneers, and he's once again proven to be an effective play-caller. In 2020 alone, Tampa Bay ranks No. 6 in total defense (327.1 yards allowed per game) and No. 8 in points allowed per game (22.2).

They have done that without a key cog in the middle of the defense, as Vita Vea suffered a season-ending injury in October.

Detroit and Atlanta both have some interesting pieces defensively, so maybe one of those could be a suitable fit. Bowles in still in the beginning stages of working his way back into a head coaching job, however.

Let's see how it turns out.
