Hawaii’s Big Island Summits are under a rare blizzard warning and a large amount of snow is anticipated in the area with a generally tropically climate.
The National Weather Service issued an “urgent” warning Friday ahead of a huge storm hitting the state.
“Blizzard warning for the Big Island summits,” the weather advisory reads. “Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility at times, with periods of zero visibility.”
The warning is in place from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday local time and a high-wind warning has also been put into effect.
“Blizzard conditions expected,” the alert reads. “Total snow accumulations of up to 12 inches or more. Winds gusting over 100 mph.”
The NWS anticipates winds to gust over 100 mph, and total snow accumulations may be up to a full foot “or more” — the strong winds “will likely cause significant drifting of snow” and has also placed a “High Wind Warning” in effect, per the alert.
