The Search Continues

After Nick Saban withdrew his name for consideration at Texas (allegedly), our odds on who might be the next coach in Austin were spun upside down. Fortunately an offshore sportsbook went one step further a few days ago allowing bettors to actually put their money where their mouth is regarding Mack Brown’s heir apparent.  The prices they used surprised me and given the fluidity of the coaching search there's already been seismic shifts in the prices.

Setting a betting market where public opinion plays the same role as actual facts means numbers will reflect truth and fan bias equally.  Charlie Strong's odds of 5-2 were cut in half overnight to 6-5 with the buzz around his candidacy reaching a fevered pitch. David Shaw’s, once rumored to have an inside track on the job, saw his price nose dive from 7-2 down to 15-1 in that same time span. More importantly a man who wasn't even listed on the board as of yesterday, Chip Kelly, is now right in the thick of things at 8-1 making him the 5th listed favorite. Until Texas names a new head coach, it will be interesting to watch the wild fluctuations in odds.

Without further pretense here's your complete list of odds for who will be the next coach at Texas courtesty of www.sportsbook.ag.  Keep in mind the book doesn’t offer any “field” option so there’s always a chance the house will keep every penny wagered in the market if no one on this list gets the job.
