Texas State Players Carry Jersey of Murdered Teammate Before Game

It was an emotional day for the Texas State, which arrived to its game against Sun Belt Conference rival Coastal Carolina carrying the jersey of a fallen teammate.

The jersey in question belonged to defensive back Khambrail Winters, who was shot to death at a San Marcos, Texas, apartment complex earlier this week. Law enforcement officials said that Winters was shot during a drug deal gone bad.

Two men have since been arrested in connection with the murder. According to officials, the suspects went to the apartment complex to buy marijuana.

"We will stand together as a team and support one another during this difficult time,'' Texas State coach Jake Spavital said in a statement. "Our thoughts and condolences are with Khambrail's family and loved ones.''

Officials said Winters' killing is the third homicide reported in San Marcos in 2020.

Coastal Carolina, ranked No. 20 in FBS with a 9-0 record, emerged with a 49-14 victory. Texas State fell to 2-10.
