Swamp Of Embarrassment Continues For Gators

Videos by OutKick

The University of Florida’s football season has gone from curiously hopeful to cringe-worthy in the span of a few weeks. After the Gators opened the season with wins in three of their first four games — their only loss coming by two points against Alabama — Gator nation was ready to proclaim Florida as back. Now, UF has spent the past five weeks giving an FU to anyone who expected a return to glory.

Following Saturday’s blowout at the hands of perennial SEC afterthought South Carolina, Gators coach Dan Mullen handed both his offensive line coach and defensive coordinator their walking papers. Then just hours later, he acknowledged further humiliation within the Gator program.

Mullen admitted to reporters on Monday that starting quarterback Anthony Richardson didn’t play in Saturday’s loss because he was injured. But the ailment wasn’t football related. The freshman signal caller injured himself while dancing in the team hotel on Friday.

He clearly wasn’t performing a victory dance.

In Richardson’s absence, the Gators went just 3 of 10 on third down and dropped their third straight game, leaving Florida at a disappointing 4-5 on the season.

Rather than feel embarrassed about the two-step gone too-bad, Florida’s freshman quarterback confirmed his coach’s admission and even provided a tutorial for anyone interested in a choreographed pregame pirouette.

“For context: this is the dance,” tweeted Richardson.

Before closing Monday’s press conference, Mullen said, “My job is to make sure we perform and this team plays to the Gator standard, which we’re not doing right now. It’s my responsibility to find a way to fix that.”

He can start by replacing the Gators’ dancing shoes with cleats.
