Stan Van Gundy Roasts His Brother Jeff During March Madness Broadcast

Stan Van Gundy took time out of his day to roast his younger brother, Jeff, on live TV.

During CBS’ broadcast of the Purdue-Utah State Round of 32 game, Stan Van Gundy switched the topic of conversation to the number of athletes who transfer in collegiate sports.

But instead of analyzing the biggest transfer success stories from college basketball, or highlighting players from the game who started out with different schools, Van Gundy decided to highlight one man who switched schools several times in his collegiate career.

That man was none other than Jeff.

"We talk about all of these transfers now in college sports, and they're going everywhere. My brother (Jeff), way ahead of his time on that. He managed to get to four schools in five years a looong time before the transfer portal," Stan said.

He wasn’t lying. After beginning his career with Yale, Jeff transferred to Menlo College, and finally to Nazareth College (where he graduated from in 1985). In 1984, Jeff helped the Golden Flyers reach the Division II tournament, and he finished his time at Nazareth as the school’s leader in career free throw percentage (86.8 percent).

While his numbers were a bit off, Stan was right about one thing. Jeff was one of the pioneers of the transfer portal, way before the rest of us even dreamed of what it was.

It was a good thing Stan offered this funny anecdote during the broadcast, because the rest of the game was a snoozefest. The Boilermakers crushed the Aggies, 106-67, to book a spot in the Sweet 16.
