Monaco Grand Prix Opens With Chaos, Huge Crash

The Monaco Grand Prix kicked off the best day on the motorsports calendar, but we didn't get a whole lot of racing before everything came grinding to a halt.

Sure, red flags are not uncommon at Monaco, but a first lap as eventful as this one isn't the norm.

Things went sideways in every conceivable way. Before we had even seen one lap complete, there were three different incidents that all happened before the tunnel.

First was a bit of paint trading between Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and McLaren's Oscar Piastri that sent Sainz into the run-off area with a puncture.

Luckily for him, he was able to get back to the pits and get those tires swapped out thanks to the red flag that came out for this bit of insanity that happened within the first three corners involving Sergio Perez and both Haas cars.

That looked like an ill-advised lunge from Kevin Magnussen and it took out his teammate Nico Hulkenberg. It also ruined Checo's Red Bull about as badly as you'll see a Formula 1 car get ruined at Monaco.

Fortunately, everyone was okay and there was no grandstand behind the wall that Perez and Magnussen hit because debris went absolutely everywhere.

Luckily Formula 1 cars are incredibly safe these days and there's a perfect example of that.

That caps off a nightmare weekend for Haas which had both cars sent to the back of the grid after being disqualified from qualifying due to a DRS infringement.

But wait, there's more!

Speaking of ill-advised lunges, check out what happened when Alpine's Esteban Ocon tried to scoot up the inside of his teammate Pierre Gasly at Portier.

And now from Aston Martin's Lance Stroll's point of view:

Between Haas and Alpine, there will be some very interesting team debriefs today.

All of that left four drivers — Perez, Magnussen, Hulkenberg, and Ocon — out of the race.
