Shocking footage surfaced from a Northern California basketball game where a teenager stomped on a helpless opponent's head, prompting an investigation from law enforcement into the senseless act of violence.
In an ABC7 exclusive report, the family of the teenager who had his head stomped on, Seth Guingab, spoke out regarding the incident on July 22. Guingab suffered injuries to the side of his face and is experiencing headaches in the aftermath, presumed to be symptoms of a concussion. Guingab's parents, Eva and Rodrick, spoke with the outlet, detailing the scene.
Eva emotionally shared, "He was down on the floor and this kid just came and just stomped on him and on his head … You could clearly see the size of his shoe on his face. My son suffered a concussion for the first time he played basketball."
The scene occurred at the College of Alameda (Calif.) while Guingab was playing for the Tumakbo United Basketball team, a non-profit club that hosts games for Filipino youth nationwide.
Footage of the incident showed Guingab challenging a defender on the court as he went for the inbound play. Guingab came down with the ball, scrapping against his opponent and falling to the ground, prompting another opponent to intervene and stomp on Guingab's face.
The attacker, described as a 13-year-old youth male who played for the Payton's Place squad, was escorted out of the game and building for his act of violence. The 13-year-old claimed to be sticking up for his teammate by attacking Guingab. Alameda police are currently investigating the assault.
Guingab's team shared the ABC7 news report on their Instagram account, condemning the attack and encouraging better behavior from the players.
"Prayers to our player Seth Guingab for a fast and speedy recovery! Hope you and the family get the justice you deserve. Although this situation was uncalled for, we want to thank everyone for their outpouring support!
"We also hope and pray for the player that was involved in this incident. We hope you find guidance and learn that the decisions you make can impact an outcome with consequences … let’s all unite to make basketball a safer place!"
Tumakbo United's coach also spoke about the incident.
"I think everyone was just in shock - I think we all kind of went on the court and went to the coach of the other team to say, 'What just happened what's going on?'" commented coach Michael Tolentino.
ABC7 also shared that the attacker is experiencing "cyber-bullying" over his actions. A statement was released on behalf of Peyton's Place, apologizing for their player's actions and condemning the violence against Seth Guingab.
The statement read, "There is footage circulating of one of our team’s games this past weekend. Unfortunately, the footage is not a positive representation of our team and our values. The behavior that was exhibited by our player is not acceptable, and is being taken seriously.
"We do not condone violence. Our players are expected to conduct themselves with integrity on and off the court. At this time, both teams are working together to resolve this matter."
