St. Louis Completes First Season Sweep With Sweet Little League Homer

Earlier this month, the Colorado Rockies recorded their first series sweep of the 2024 MLB season in extraordinary fashion against the Texas Rangers. Colorado put on a defensive gem of a game to win its third straight over the reigning champs (adding the David and Goliath element to the sweep).

The St. Louis Cardinals (23-26) might've topped the Rockies with their own spectacular sweep, completed on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Cards beat the superior Orioles team courtesy of an astonishing three-run Little League homer that put St. Louis ahead in the sixth.

Cardinal Brendan Donovan approached the plate with Nolan Arenado in scoring position and Dylan Carlson on first. He belted a deep shot to right-center field that kickstarted a bumbling, rumbling, stumbling miscue by Baltimore's infield defense.

A late throw to the plate after Carlson scored allowed Donovan to reach third. Orioles catcher James McCann tallied an error by overthrowing to third, allowing the German to circle the bases and put the Cards ahead by one run.

St. Louis ultimately won, 5-4.

The road to three straight for St. Louis wasn't easy.

In Tuesday's 3-1 win by the Cards, outfielder Lars Nootbar was ejected from the game after he chewed out an ump. St. Louis also lost manager Oliver Marmol early in Wednesday's game for arguing balls and strikes.

According to Talkin' Baseball, St. Louis handed Baltimore its first series sweep since Adley Rutschman joined the Orioles, cutting a streak of 106 series without being swept. The Orioles' series streak was the longest streak since St. Louis’ streak of 125 games in 1942-44.
