Angel Reese's Strange Reason Why She Didn't Get Involved In LSU-South Carolina Scuffle

A massive scuffle broke out in the final minutes of the SEC women’s basketball title game between LSU and South Carolina, and nearly everyone got involved in the fight.

Everyone, that is, except Angel Reese.

When Kamilla Cardoso shoved Flau'jae Johnson at mid-court late in the fourth quarter, all heck broke loose. Both benches emptied, and even Johnson’s brother came from the stands, came over the barrier, and tried to help his sister.

But Reese couldn’t be bothered to join, not one bit.

Fox Sports 1’s Emmanuel Acho retweeted footage of the game just as the scuffle began. As members of the Tigers rushed to the aid of Johnson, Reese blissfully walked away from the action and sat down at the end of the bench.

Now you would think that in a situation like this, the player leaders of either team would do whatever they could to support their teammates and break up the scuffle. Reese - one of the unquestioned leaders of that team - apparently didn’t think so, and seemed perfectly content with letting everyone else take care of things.

After getting called out for her actions, Reese offered a highly questionable explanation for why she walked away from everything.

Reese's Explanation Makes Little To No Sense

This tweet reads like a LeBron James post, complete with the all-caps words and a heavy dose of self-focus sprinkled in (what kind of status does she think she has, by the way?).

I don’t buy the first part of her excuse one bit. The best players on a team in a variety of sports will more often than not do what they can to diffuse a fight, even if they’re not at the center of it. That’s what good leaders do.

Reese isn’t a captain for LSU, but that doesn’t mean she gets a free pass to let her whole team do the dirty work of cleaning up a fight while she puts her feet up.

Oh, and by the way, she was just fine trying to pick fights with Cardoso earlier in the game. In her mind, it’s fine to try to start a conflict, just not help end one.

I will allow a little bit of grace for Reese on the injury front, but only to a certain extent. Sure, a rolled ankle hurts and needs attention. But if she wants to prove she deserves her "status" on the team, she has to do something more than walk away. Maybe start telling players on the outskirts of the fight to go back to the bench? You don’t need two full healthy ankles to do that!

Eventually, she helped calm Johnson down after the scuffle subsided.

But frankly, it was a little too late. Reese proved her number one priority in big situations is herself, not her teammates. That certainly won’t improve her "status" with anyone.
