Shane Beamer, South Carolina Will Open College Season Against Virginia Tech

Shane Beamer is hoping his stay in Columbia, South Carolina will be long and prosperous. If that happens, he should still be around when the Gamecocks take on Virginia Tech in 2025.

That eventual matchup was announced on Friday, and will be a part of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes Benz-Stadium. The date has been set for either Sunday, Aug. 31 or Monday, Sept. 1, 2025.

This game will have a little extra motivation for the new head coach of the Gamecocks. He is the son of former legendary Hokies coach Frank Beamer, and he played for his father at the university from 1995-99. That connections alone will make this a showdown worth circling on the calendar.

Here is what Beamer had to say about adding a future opponent like Virginia Tech:

“Any time you open a season in a premier event like the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game against a quality opponent like Virginia Tech, it’s exciting for our players, staff and fans and helps in our recruiting efforts. Having been part of this game before, I know it’s run in a first-class manner and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

The last time these two teams met was in 1991, and South Carolina won 28-21. They both have obviously come a long way since then.
