Padres outfielder Jorge Mateo could have made a play at the wall yesterday off the bat of SF Giant Darin Ruf, but unfortunately, it was a ruf one. The ball bounced off his glove and flew straight over the wall for a home run like he was Jose Canseco. Not an easy play by any stretch of the imagination, but still a tough a break.

Mateo will have a million chances at this play, as he’s only 25, but you never want a play like this on your resume. He has a day off today to think about it, and then he’ll be right back at it Friday when the Padres take on the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
Yeah, I’m cutting him some slack. That’s a TOUGH play, right there, especially in the middle of the afternoon sun. Canseco’s gaffe was much more egregious.
