Kyle Shanahan was not sure any of us would be here on Sunday. The San Francisco 49ers head coach said as much during a press conference last week when he was asked whether Jimmy Garoppolo would be on the roster this upcoming season.
Well, we made it — and so did several of Shanahan’s players.
We only know this because, according to Mike Garafolo with the NFL Network, those players called Shanahan on Sunday to let him know of their well-being. They survived until Sunday, so all is right in the world.
Take 2 sans typo:
This is tremendous. I’m told a group of #49ers players called Kyle Shanahan today to let him know they survived until Sunday. So good.

Made it to Sunday. Someone tell Kyle Shanahan. pic.twitter.com/KwI1KUmQMI

That is fantastic. If everyone had his number, we can assure you his phone wouldn’t have stopped ringing. I probably would’ve called on Monday too, just to make sure Shanahan knew that we’re exceeding expectations out here.
You know who else made it to Sunday though? Garoppolo.
After the team drafted North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance in the first round on Thursday night, we now know that the plan — at least right now — is to keep Garoppolo around in 2021. In fact, the team isn’t even going to ask him to take a pay cut.
It’s all about survival, folks. So far, so good.
