The New Orleans Saints are moving on in the NFC playoffs after a 21-9 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon, but the team is also looking ahead to 2021 and beyond.
The biggest position in question is the quarterback spot, where future Hall of Famer Drew Brees is reportedly ready to retire whenever this current Saints playoff run ends.
The club has Taysom Hill already waiting in the wings. Hill was even given a chance to start a couple games in 2020 when Brees went down with an injury.
However, the team also has a decision to make on former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.
New Orleans inked Winston to a one-year deal worth a reported $1.1 million, but the Saints really didn’t get to see what they have in the quarterback. He played in just four games throwing 11 passes.
Even with his limited playing time, Sean Payton still wants to bring him back. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Payton is “eager” to re-sign the quarterback for the 2021 season.
The report states that with Brees retiring after the team’s last game, Payton wants both Winston and Hill to play significant roles for New Orleans in 2021.
It was a surprise to some when Payton overlooked Winston to go with Hill earlier in the season, but the coach still has confidence in the ex-first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Now we will see if Winston wants to come back and whether he will get the chance to be the starter over Hill.
Winston & Mariota are starting caliber QB’s in this league. Smart move if they keep him and can probably sign him to a team-friendly deal.
Were you in a coma for 5 years
Nah.. I’ve watched 20+ years of Buccaneer 3&out offense. Only reason this team won a SB back in the day was because of a historically great defense with multiple HOF players. Winston throws picks but he also puts points on the board. We’ve seen his ceiling (5,000+ yards in a season). If he can cut back on the turnovers he’s a damn good QB.
Keep those pick 6’s coming
I wonder if when they hand him the pen to sign his contract he drops it, and then hands it back to the wrong person when he’s finished?
