Resurfaced Story Recalls Time When New LSU HC Brian Kelly Made Assistants Shovel Driveway At Party

Cue the Brian Kelly horror stories in the wake of his shocking departure from Notre Dame.

Kelly, 60, officially became LSU’s head coach on Monday after spending 11 seasons at Notre Dame, becoming the all-time winningest coach in the history of the program. Much has been said about the way Kelly left and the nature of his departure.

According to OutKick’s Joe Kinsey, Kelly’s 7 a.m. Tuesday meeting with the players before he left lasted four minutes. He then turned around and walked out without taking any questions.

Now, an old story about Kelly’s time at Central Michigan has since resurfaced.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh told a story of a time when he and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur were invited to a party at Kelly’s house. Saleh and LaFleur were graduate assistants under Kelly but apparently weren’t on the guest list. As ESPN’s Rob Demovsky wrote in 2019, Kelly had other plans for the young duo.

“We shoveled the snow and parked all the cars,” Saleh said. “Then, at the end of the night, we had to go get the cars again.”

From that day forward, both Saleh and LaFleur made a commitment to be different — a commitment both have lived up to.

“We decided that when we’re in that position, we’re never going to treat people the way we got treated,” Saleh said. “And Matty’s lived up to it.”
