Report: Mets To Hire Former Yankees Exec Billy Eppler As Next GM

Billy Eppler is finalizing an agreement to become the next New York Mets general manager, according to numerous reports.

Eppler, the former Los Angeles Angels GM and New York Yankees executive, became a stronger candidate for the Mets and team owner Steve Cohen in recent days, NY Daily News reports. Eppler is said to have met with Cohen face-to-face over the weekend.

MLB.com's Anthony DiComo reports that while the team has not yet confirmed the deal because it is not yet official, a source said the two sides were working out final contract details and completing a background check.

"Once that work is finished, Eppler should become GM as soon as this week," DiComo said.

Even before the Mets fired interim GM Zack Scott — who was with the team less than a year — New York was searching for a new executive to lead baseball operations all offseason.

Eppler has spent most of his career in front offices, most prominently as Angels GM from 2015-20 and as a Yankees scout and executive from 2004-15, The Athletic reports.
