Sounds like college football got its first major referee controversy of the holiday season last night
I was sound asleep since I get up at 4:45 a.m. these days, but I hear there was a major controversy at the end of the Purdue-Minnesota game where a ref flagged the Purdue receiver for offensive pass interference, sending the social media blue checkmarks into a frenzy. Scott Van Pelt was offering to start a GoFundMe to cover fines incurred by Jeff Brohm if he went off on the Big Ten officials. Clay was very fired up. It was quite a scene and should be a preview of what’s to come out of social media as football fires up down the homestretch. This is good news. We have football, healthy sports arguments to keep us busy and a very short work week — for some — coming up. The holidays are officially here.
Did you happen to catch the Friday night conversation Jason Whitlock had with adult superstar Brandi Love? That was quite a scene. There I was in the backyard trying to enjoy a fire, a few pops and the best weather this late in November that I can ever remember and yet I was enjoying Jason breaking bread with one of the legends. Brandi’s a married woman but said she’d have dinner with Jason. That’s definitely the content we need. Turns out Brandi, who went to school in the MAC like Jason, is a “hardcore Constitutional Conservative.” We’ll have to see where that one goes. Definitely something for you guys to keep your eyes on.
• Even with a dozen or so cancellations or postponements across the country, this is a massive college football weekend, especially for the Big Ten. Is Indiana capable of winning in Columbus? The Hoosiers haven’t beaten Ohio State since 1988 and haven’t won in Columbus since 1987. Indiana teams since then haven’t had a quarterback like Michael Penix Jr.
• I know you’ll be looking for it, but you won’t get it. CBS doesn’t have a 3:30 ET SEC game. This time of year that’s a travesty. The holiday season to me is the SEC on CBS and in the late afternoon with the sun going down.
• Tonight on ABC, it’s Bedlam at 7:30 with Oklahoma State rolling into Norman. It feels like the Big 12 has been out of the CFB Final Four talk for five months. At this point, nothing that happens in this one will change things.
• The real interesting game at 7:30 is on ESPN3. No. 21 Liberty is at N.C. State. This is the type of game Hugh Freeze was brought in to win for the Flames. Imagine saying that five years ago when Hugh had Ole Miss all the way up to No. 3 in the AP poll. Wild times indeed.
Enjoy the weekend. Send me photos of anything that deserves to be in Screencaps and I’ll see you guys back here Monday morning.
