Police Believe Ex-Vols Player Brandon Davis Was Shot By Teammate

Knoxville police suspect former Tennessee Volunteers football player Brandon Davis was accidentally shot by a current member of the team a year ago, after initially believing he had shot himself.

Davis was shot in the left thigh inside the Uptown Bar in March 2020. Police initially questioned whether he was telling the truth when he said someone else shot him. But after an investigation, it appears Davis was being honest.

The current player suspected of shooting Davis was not named in various reports, as he has not been arrested or charged.

As Knox News relayed, the case closed on Jan. 5.

“He just wanted it to be known that he did not shoot himself,” police investigator Brandon Wardlaw wrote in a report obtained by Knox News via a public records request.

Davis, 21, transferred to Garden City (Kan.) Community College last summer. He has since enrolled at Navarro College in Texas, where he plays cornerback for the football team.

“Davis told a police investigator in March 2020 that he heard a popping sound while inside UpTown Bar and later realized he’d been shot but didn’t immediately know who did it,” the Knox News reported. “He received medical treatment for a non-life-threatening injury.”
