Five-time major champion Phil Mickelson is leading after 36 holes at the PGA Championship. The 50-year-old lefty came into the weekend at +25000 — well, how about now?
Jack Nicklaus won his final major at 46, which makes you wonder: Can Mickelson really hold up another two rounds? Would be quite the story. I guess if Tom Brady can win a Super Bowl at 43, why the heck not right? Do it, Phil!
Mickelson claims his brother has been the catalyst to his tournament lead.
“My brother is doing a phenomenal job judging the wind,” Mickelson said following his round. “Just understanding the type of flight we need to manage the wind.”
The wind has been a major factor that’s making this an exhausting week of golf in South Carolina. Mickelson concluded that he isn’t getting too excited until he’s leading after Sunday. Probably smart considering players, like Dustin Johnson, have shown they can turn in a monster score on any given hole.
It’s now been more than ten years since he last captured The Open title, but Phil has the experience to manage this course. He needs a bit of help from the field, though. Definitely a story to watch.
