Paulina Gretzky Resurfaces, Aaron Rodgers Lookalike Identified & Bud Light ‘Vacseen’ Car Spotted In Ohio

Videos by OutKick

The email inbox is overflowing and it’s free-for-all Friday, so let’s start dumping out these messages

I want to start with the basement discussion from Thursday’s Screencaps where Tim G. asked for advice on a basement project he’s throwing around in his head. The basis for my advice was to plan, plan, plan, and plan more. It didn’t take long before the emailers started hammering the inbox with excellent advice for Tim.

Here we go!

• Let’s start with Jim M. in W. Lafayette, IN, who is tempting me with a keg system that appears to feature Two Hearted, Guinness & Smithwick’s. I have to say, after a summer drinking quite a bit of Bell’s, I’m convinced that’s my favorite brewery. I know the beer snobs will come in and crush me and say Bell’s is so 2014 or something like that. Bring it, beer snobs!

Now, for Jim’s email:

I couldn’t have agreed more with your general points – I am attaching a photo of my bar area. It contains a 6 tap beer dispensing system. And that was a point of much debate and planning.

  1. Plan, plan, and plan again. Cut out paper layouts to see how the size of things works on your area.
  2. Show your idea to good friends and family and ask for their input.
  3. Really understand what you want the area to be able to do. I have adult aged children, I wanted a serious entertainment space, the bar was a focal point. The remodel of the fireplace, lighting and music system in the basement was all a part of it. The decision on the tap system required the installation of the largest self contained beer dispensing equipment you can get. The variety of draft beer was important in my discussions. Until that was solved the whole remodel had to wait. Demolition can start, rebuilding cannot, until you’ve answered completely what you want the area to do.
  4. Obviously, your ability to do this type of work  drives how much a contractor could be used. But you can do partial subs. I have a painter and tile guy. Any contractor is going to use them, or work them in to their process. Or you can be your own contractor, you’d be surprised how many people you know, and how much you can save if you have time to oversee the project.

• Wait until Indy Daryl reads what madman Kurtis J. is up to. Typically, I’d offer a hand to a local Screencaps reader like Kurtis, but not in this case. Read what he’s doing with a retaining wall & how he finished his basement floor:

Joe, great work like always. I am responding to the basement remodel input and echo all your suggestions. As someone who never considered themselves “handy” I am undertaking some serious home projects. The first was a basement remodel and I attached 3 pics for reference. I did all the work except for mudding the seams of the new drywall. The biggest cost-saving measure I would say was just painting the concrete floor. A ton of work comes with that route to include patchwork, sanding, and cleaning prep prior to the actual painting, but I think it turned out great and with some rugs, it makes it very cozy.

Now, I am doing a retaining wall project unfortunately at the onset of winter. This is involving 36 tons of foundation stone and 32 tons of backfill/base stone. Also in an effort to save money, and keep with the “do hard things” mantra (some would say stupidity), I am employing the Egyptian method of construction and using the basics of a dolly, shovel, and wheelbarrow as my most basic tools. Will send pics upon completion.

• Matt in Nashville was all over the topic of basements:

For Tim G’s question on finishing his basement, I like all of your suggestions. If someone isn’t a DIY pro, it can be a daunting undertaking, so they should definitely consult some guys with experience. If you and you crew know what you’re doing though, I find it best to just take the plunge. One piece of advice: add at least one unique aspect to it that’ll get people talking. Wife and I decided to do a custom wood wall in ours. Our neighborhood was still under construction and there was a pallet dropoff spot so every week I would just go grab the best looking ones and stick em in my garage. Then once we had enough we made our wall. Do something fun and different – you’ll be glad you did. Good luck to Tim and all the guys out there contemplating this same task.

• Robert S. writes:

A friend of mine went to an auto salvage yard and bought the tail-end sheet metal of an old Cadillac, the model with the rocketship tail fins, and made that his bar. It was the metal extending from the base of the rear window on back. What once was the trunk became the bar. A little paint, a little chrome, and it was a winner.

• Beau in Toledo has a plate and sticker you need to see:

Saw this plate on the way home from work today:
For those NOT an Old Guy like me, Louise Fletcher played Nurse Ratched in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST in 1975.  #ScreenCapNation should check that one out.
(Another great movie that probably could NOT get re-made in this day and age,)

Zoom in, if necessary:

• Sean K. wrote in this week wondering about Screencaps readers who own businesses, restaurants, bars, etc. that Screencaps readers could visit to spend money. Berend in Tennessee stepped up with this offer:

I love Sean’s idea and would love to see what all local places people own. I wanted to share the Airbnb that my wife and I own about 20 minutes north or Nashville. Would love to give a solid discount to any Screencaps reader that would be interested in visiting! Just shoot me a message on Airbnb letting me know and I would be more than happy to get you set up with a visit to Nashville!

Looking forward to seeing others local spots and hopefully visiting some myself.

• Gerard W. fired up the grill this week:

Grilled a night early due to 70 degree weather in Northern Illinois on December 15th.   Gas Weber wouldn’t stay lit with the gale force winds so had to grill burgers on the Trager inside the machine shed.  The “Pizza Burgers” are pork burger, pizza sauce, peperoni, mushrooms and Mozzarella.

• Ryan W. did some grilling. Look at this art:

Brats. Just brats. Sometimes that’s all one needs.

• Joey P. in Pittsburgh wants to talk sports:

Why do you think some of the college football players that skip their bowl games so they don’t get hurt playing in a meaningless contest that will cost them money in the NFL will then turn around and play in these college all-star exhibition games?  That’s just stupid.

####

I don’t track the Senior Bowls these days, but I’m fairly certain the top guys aren’t playing in those games as well. Again, I don’t think it’s wise to get emotional over these college guys skipping bowl games, especially now that we’re into the NIL era. Do your best to enjoy the entertainment when it’s on for 12 hours on a Saturday. Try to find enjoyment in the friendships you develop over beers at the bar with fellow fans.

Enjoy those garage beer nights with the guys while the game is on in the background. I know college football is why some adult males wake up in the morning, but you have to remind yourself that it’s a business and people are going to make business decisions.

I’ll be cheering for the guys who suit up today at noon when my Toledo Rockets get the bowl season rolling today in the Bahamas. They’re going to play four quarters, someone will win, and then I’ll go back to thinking of projects I want to knock out this winter.

• Guys, I think this might be one of my favorite Friday Screencaps of the year: basements, beer, meat, pigskin. That’s what it’s all about on a Friday. Now go out there and finish 2021 strong. I know this is your final day of work until January 3, so don’t slack off now. Make sure your employees are reading Screencaps. Make sure your fellow blue-collar buddies are sliding into this post on a daily basis.

You rest, drink, eat meat, drink bourbon and let us take it from here for the next two weeks.
