Panthers Offered QB Bridgewater And 8th Overall Pick To Lions For QB Stafford

Now a week-plus removed from the shocking trade of quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff, more reports are coming out about other teams that had their eyes on Stafford but were unable to obtain him via trade.

One such team is the Carolina Panthers, who are on the lookout for a quarterback after a very average season for Teddy Bridgewater in 2020.

Bridgewater went just 4-11 in 15 games as the Panthers’ starter, throwing for 3733 yards with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

It’s been no secret that the Panthers are interested in acquiring another quarterback, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team was in fact in the mix for Stafford.

Schefter reports that the Panthers’ package to the Lions would have included the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft, a fifth-round pick and Bridgewater.

In the end though, the Rams’ package appealed to the Lions more, likely because Goff has been more successful than Bridgewater as an NFL starter and can be inserted right away as the Lions’ starter.

The entire package sent to the Lions included a third-round pick this year, two future first-round picks and Goff.

As for Bridgewater, he’s still the starter in Carolina for now, and one player on the roster who would like to see him get another shot in 2021 is franchise running back Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey spoke about the QB Saturday night at the NFL Honors show.

“When we signed Teddy this offseason, I knew we were getting a great player. I didn’t know we were getting such a great teammate,” McCaffrey said.

“He had a long road to get here, but Teddy always finds his blessings. And that positive spirit is contagious.”
