CFB AM: Ezekiel Elliott will seek and destroy every last Hokie

Finally, after months and months of speculation, we will find out tonight who Ohio State's starting quarterback is and how the playing time will be split up between J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones as the No. 1 Buckeyes visit Virginia Tech.

But really, it may not matter at all who's under center for Ohio State. Why?

Because Ezekiel Elliott is in the backfield, and he's clearly coming to Lane Stadium to destroy every last bit of the Hokies.

Look at this picture from his Twitter feed on Sunday:

Does that look like a dude who's out here playing GAMES?

I like to assume Elliott spent all of Sunday in the cryotherapy chamber (I know that's impossible and you might freeze to death, but I don't consider Elliott to be human) watching every snap of last year's loss to VT on a loop, a game in which Elliott was held to 32 yards on eight carries.

He'll have his shot at revenge in Blacksburg. Like the rest of you, I cannot wait for this game.

Elliott is trying to remain grounded now the he's labeled as a Heisman favorite, writes Tim May. Braxton Miller will be the X-factor against the Hokies, not either of the quarterbacks, writes Ben Axelrod.  Even after winning in Columbus last year, nobody still gives the Hokies much of a chance against Ohio State, writes Andy Bitter.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

Week 1 was brutal for injuries. It was a terrific opening weekend in college football, except for the unfortunate reality of so many players suffering significant injuries. BYU beat Nebraska on a Hail Mary but lost quarterback Taysom Hill for the season with a foot injury, the third time in four years Hill has suffered a season-ending injury. Notre Dame lost running back Tarean Folston for the season with a knee injury, and the Irish were already short a RB as is. UCLA lost stud DT Eddie Vanderdoes for the season with a torn ACL. Clemson WR Mike Williams suffered a "small fracture" in his neck after colliding with a padded goalpost while scoring a touchdown, and he will be out a minimum of six weeks, if not the rest of the year. Worst of all, Georgetown LB Ty Williams suffered five broken vertebrae in his neck and underwent emergency surgery over the weekend. He reportedly had feeling in his legs prior to surgery but could not move them. Playing football again, at this point, is a secondary concern. Here's to hoping Williams simply can make a full recovery.

Penn State's 259-pound kicker was awesome. We need to feel better about something after all the injuries, and hefty Joey Julius will bring you lots of joy (unfortunately Penn State lost to Temple). Get this: He ran track in high school and turned down a soccer scholarship to be a walk-on kicker for the Nittany Lions.

The ugliest of losses. Stanford lost at Northwestern, which was a shock to those who picked the Cardinal to win the Pac-12, and Washington State lost to Portland State despite being 31-point favorites. Others, like the aforementioned Penn State loss, had bad L's, too. But nothing beats Kansas losing to South Dakota State by fumbling the snap when the Jayhawks were trying to spike the ball and set up a game-tying field goal. Man, David Beaty has some work to do.

Kansas State's band got pretty lewd. The funniest story from Week 1: The K-State band did a Star Trek- and Star Wars-themed halftime show and one formation on the field looked very much like a penis aimed at a Kansas Jayhawk. K-State officials apologized for the halftime show and said they were definitely NOT drawing out a penis and directing it at a Jayhawk, but you can decide what you see here:

This high school referee story is crazy. Two Texas high school players have been suspended for targeting and hitting a referee during a game on Friday night. The school district is investigating the incident, but it's unlike anything you've probably ever seen in a football game, and Mike Pereira says criminal charges need to be brought against the players and Jon Jay High School's season needs to be forfeited. Here's the video with Pereira's explanation:

LASTLY

* This Bowling Green player shows you exactly how not to fake an injury.

* I don't know if we're appreciating this Robert Nkemdiche touchdown enough. Watch this play and remember Nkemdiche is a big lunch away from weighing 300 pounds.

* Hope you all enjoy your Labor Day holiday as much as Northwestern assistant head coach Jerry Brown enjoyed getting down in the locker room after beating Stanford.

Have a great Monday, everyone.
