Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa recently said he is seeking “a big long contract.” He hasn’t gotten that yet, but he did get pegged with a pitch and maybe a hurt ego during the season opener against the Oakland A’s on Thursday — much to the Oakland Coliseum crowd’s delight.
Remnants of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal remain, leading opposing fans to root heartily against them at every turn. So when A’s pitcher Chris Bassitt drilled Correa with a fastball, the crowd went crazy.
Correa, 26, is one of several players left from the Astros’ 2017 World Series title team. He played a major role in making the Astros villains, and he seems to have embraced the label.
But there’s a price to pay for playing that role, and it includes getting taunted when things go wrong. Fans of the A’s had no issue demonstrating that.
A baseball fan never forgets. Neither does a pitcher.
Too bad that pitcher doesn’t have to bat. Throw at his head. They need to get rid of these stupid unwritten rules and also get rid of the defensive shifts.
Too bad the Astros are in the AL now.
