Oakland A's Ink Veteran Closer Sergio Romo To One-Year Deal

It was a tough start to free agency for the Oakland A's, as the team's bullpen saw a number of players ink with other squads.

The team lost four relievers and closer Liam Hendricks, and with camp closing in, the team has been looking around the league to try and revamp the roster to be able to stay at the top of the AL West. They won the division in 2020 with a 36-24 mark.

The team made a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers last week to get some help, dealing Sheldon Neuse and Gus Varland for lefty reliever Adam Kolarek and outfielder Cody Thomas.

The club continued to build on Sunday, as Oakland picked up veteran reliever Sergio Romo on a one-year deal worth $2.25 million.

Inking Romo came just about 20 minutes after the team brought back relief pitcher Yusmeiro Petit into the team's fold.

Getting Romo could be a huge boost for Oakland, as he won three rings with the San Francisco Giants. He was also an All-Star back in 2013 when he saved 38 games for San Francisco.

Romo was with the Giants for nine seasons, two years each with the Twins and Rays, and a year each with the Dodgers and Miami Marlins.

At 38, Romo still has enough gas in the tank to be a successful closer in the Majors, and with the A's looking to fill that role, expect the veteran to get the first crack to be the team's closer once spring training opens up.
