Noonan From ‘Caddyshack’ Hired For U.S. Open Caddying Job

“Noonan!” “Noooonan!”

Actor Michael O’Keefe and his new buddy, golfer Danny Balin, will likely hear that a few times this week at New York’s Winged Foot Golf Club where Balin will be participating in the U.S. Open with Noonan from Caddyshack on his bag – for practice rounds. It won’t be from fans outside the ropes — COVID killed that plan — but you have to figure Balin’s practice round group will let a “NOONAN” fly while the golfers get a look at the one-foot rough.

What’s a 65-year-old actor from a movie released 40-years-ago this summer doing caddying practice rounds in the U.S. Open for Balin, a guy who’s the head pro at Fresh Meadow Country Club on Long Island? O’Keefe wrote a post on Golf.com September 3 about his desire to work this year’s Open.

“Why now? If not now, I may never have another chance! I’m 65 and not getting any younger, though my wife tells me I’m still devilishly handsome,” ‘Danny Noonan’ said in his cover letter to golfers out there looking for a caddy this week.

I may be 65, but I act like I’m 30,” he added.

Balin hired him.

“I try to take this somewhat serious, so I would never do this during a tournament round,’’ Balin told the New York Post. “But I was like, ‘Yeah, this will be cool. Danny Noonan. Monday and Tuesday.’ It’ll be a fun couple of days. It’ll lighten the mood up.’’

And there it is, the simple thing so many people should be trying to do it life: Lighten the mood. Find happiness, even if it’s for a couple of days. Good for Balin and Noonan helping each other find a little happiness in this life. Miserable people in this world hate to see this. Happiness must win out. Go get you some.
