Niners Would Only Trade Jimmy Garoppolo For Deshaun Watson

The San Francisco 49ers aren't ready to entirely ready to give up on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. But that would do likely do it for current Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson.

In fact, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the 49ers would only trade Garoppolo if it meant getting Watson in return. Watson, of course, is said to want out of Houston.

“They believe they can win with him, but it would take a big swing, like a Deshaun Watson effect here, to make that change,” Fowler said, via Bleacher Report’s Tyler Conway. “And I’m told that the 49ers are one of the teams that Watson’s at least intrigued by."

Garoppolo seemingly fell out of favor just one year after leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl. But playing on an injured ankle for parts of the season may have had something to do with that. He appeared in just six games, winning three, in 2020.

Meanwhile, Watson is the supposedly available quarterback most teams would love to have following the Texans' miserable season. But right now, it all seems like just talk.

"A source said, ‘Which quarterback wouldn’t want to be in that offense on that team with all those weapons and Kyle Shanahan?’ So always a possibility, but the Texans have made clear they’re not willing to deal Watson right now," Fowler said. "Garoppolo’s still a viable option for San Fran.”
