NHL Betting Report: Three Games to Bet Tuesday, January 19

Our hockey week kicked off with a bang Monday night, going 2-1 on our bets. Tuesday’s slate offers another great opportunity with nine games scheduled.

From a bettor’s perspective, this season’s most intriguing aspect is seeing how teams fare against one another in back-to-back games. Each team’s schedule consists of mostly two-game sets in a condensed 56-game season. Some teams will even play each other four consecutive times, like the Arizona Coyotes and Vegas Golden Knights are doing this week.

It is yet to be determined whether the first game’s winner or loser is the presumed better side to bet on in the second game. While we can’t predict the future, we don’t need to look far for what happened in the past. Two of the games I’ve handicapped features teams that played against one another Monday night. And just like Monday, I’m making a bold pick on the puck line for your consideration. So far, we're 1-0 on those.

Columbus Blue Jackets @ Detroit Red Wings (+150)

The Pick: Under 5.5

You’ll probably want to get this number as soon as you can, as it’s likely to dip to 5 by puck drop. This game features two bad teams that don’t score much. They hit the under in their game Monday night, including a garbage-time goal from Detroit in the game’s final minute. The Blue Jackets won, 3-2, and while I kind of like the Wings to avenge the loss, betting under the total is the safest play.

Last season, the Blue Jackets were 27th in scoring, while the Red Wings were dead last. It’s a small sample size, but their scoring woes have continued into this season. They’re a combined 2-4 on the over/under. I expect this game to be even tighter than their snooze fest on Monday. I’m on under the total.

Carolina Hurricanes @ Nashville Predators (-110)

The Pick: Hurricanes -110

While it looked like I nailed this pick Monday night, the Predators won pretty much everywhere except the scoreboard. While the final score is the only stat that matters, the game was telling. The Preds outshot the Canes 33-24, impressively won the faceoff battle 30-15 and cashed in on two power play goals. Nashville was also the much more physical team, making a strong case to being amongst the NHL’s elite.

While I’m excited to bet the Preds in future games, I can’t bet against a Hurricanes team sure to make adjustments in their second game. The Canes know they got away with one, barely escaping Monday with a win, and should shore up their sloppy play Tuesday night. While being outperformed for most of the game, Carolina showed flashes of dominance in the third period en route to a 4-2 win. Take the Canes in a rare bounce-back spot.

Colorado Avalanche @ Los Angeles Kings (+190)

The Pick: Avalanche -1.5 (+120)

My bold pick of the night! It’s also the one I’m most excited to make. Colorado comes into Tuesday fresh off an 8-0 blowout win over St. Louis last Friday. The Kings, on the other hand, are coming off back-to-back overtime losses to Minnesota. Los Angeles led in both games, collapsing late. That’s a recipe for disaster against an experienced Avalanche team known for scoring in flurries. Colorado finished fourth in scoring last season and features the best front line in hockey: Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog.

The Kings are young and rebuilding, and it’ll show early. Colorado should have no problem outscoring a Kings team that finished 30th in scoring last season. The bold should take the puck line, while Avs -230 has excellent parlay value for those who want it.

UPDATE 12:27 p.m.: The game between the Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, per TSN's Pierre Lebrun.

Because of the postponement, we'll add another play in a solid bounce-back spot.

The Pick: Capitals +114

Let's make it another solid betting hockey night. Best of luck if tailing!
