Super Bowl Champion Drowns At Pro Fishing Event

Pete Lammons Jr., who won a Super Bowl as a member of Joe Namath's New York Jets, has died after falling overboard during a Major League Fishing tournament in East Texas. Lammons was 77.

The event took place at Sam Rayburn Reservoir near Nacogdoches.

"The boat was not running when Lammons fell into the water about 10 a.m. Thursday during the Major League Fishing Toyota Series," Yahoo News relayed. "His boater was unsuccessful in rescuing him, officials say."

Lammons' body was later discovered via sonar, officials said.

He played tight end for the Jets from 1966-71. In 1969, the Jets stunned the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl following a bold prediction from Namath -- who guaranteed a victory.

Before that, Lammons played football for the University of Texas, winning a national championship over top-ranked Alabama in the 1965 Orange Bowl.

He later became an experienced co-angler who competed in 57 professional tournaments, per Major League Fishing.

A moment of silence for Lammons was held prior to Friday's round.
