Roger Goodell Made An Insane Amount of Money In Last Two Years

There's a reason (or two) why some people think NFL commish Roger Goodell sits on a throne of privilege. Goodell's not just sitting on roughly 650,000 emails, he's also firmly planted atop a mountain of dough. The New York Times reported this morning that Goodell has been paid close to $128 million in the last two seasons.

Apparently the NFL can be quite profitable for those willing to turn a blind eye to the Washington Football Team's reportedly toxic culture, the favoritism between the league's general counsel and one of its teams, and alleged sexual misconduct from a superstar quarterback.

Per The Times, Goodell was paid $63,900,050 in both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 fiscal years, totaling $127.8 million. Goodell's hefty salary places him within the top 5 highest paid CEOs in the world.

Almost all of Goodell's pay came via bonuses given as a result of the NFL's new media and collective bargaining agreement, which added a 17th regular season game to each team's schedule, providing the already uber-rich NFL with yet another week of revenue.

Goodell's yearly compensation is determined by owners of the 32 NFL teams on a year-to-year basis, and via The New York Times, is structured heavily on performance-based bonuses instead of a guaranteed salary.

In sum, Goodell earned nearly $64 million in the 2020-21 pandemic season, a season in which he graciously requested that owners not pay him a "salary." Wonder whether this arrangement sits well with unvaccinated players whose actual salaries could take a hit, should they "cause" their team to sit out and forfeit a game because of COVID.
