Philly Will Be Ready To Rock The Kelly Green, Just Not Anytime Soon
After a recent rule change in the NFL allowed teams to select an alternate-color helmet, starting in 2022, Philadelphia Eagles fans grew eager to see their team pick the classic kelly green look, based on the popularity of the throwback look. Unfortunately, that won't be anytime soon.
In a race against the NFL's deadline to submit their pick, Philly made its choice of midnight green over the fan-favorite vintage kelly green version, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie commented on their pick, additionally voicing hope to see the classic color choice on the field as early as 2023.
“I would love to see it. I love the midnight green, said Lurie. "I think it’s great. But I also want the kelly green. I’d love for us to have both, and some games have one and some games have the other. I think that would be more fun.”
The league-wide memo released on Wednesday informing teams of their choice for alternate-color helmets sent fans to the archives in search of their team's perfect throwback look to nominate as the debut helmet for the new rule.
While few uniforms come as bold as New England's Pat the Patriot, or Tampa Bay's pirate-themed regalia, Philly's throwback look is king among Eagles fans since the days of the late Reggie White.
According to the Inquirer's report, "Lurie and his ex-wife, Christina, changed the team’s primary color to midnight green in 1996, two years after he purchased the Birds."
Looking to also debut a new head coach-quarterback duo with Nick Sirriani and Jalen Hurts in 2021, the team hopes that the switch to kelly green in 2023 will be the only major change needed for a team struggling to survive in the NFC East.
