Patriots Starting QB Newton Dealing With Bone Bruise In Hand, Not Considered Serious

New England Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton is nursing a hand injury, and won't be on the practice field for the next few sessions.

Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed Newton's injury and said that it will keep him out of the Patriots’ OTA practice on Thursday.

“He’s doing all right. He won’t participate today, but he’s getting better,” said Belichick, who was asked if the injury was serious.

“No. He’s not out there, but I think he’ll be all right.”

Newton has been referred to as the team's starter ever since the Pats re-signed him, and Belichick seems comfortable giving him the ball to be the Pats' opening day starter, despite how much Newton struggled in 2020.

One report says that Newton suffered a slight bone bruise that is not considered a major injury, and he should be able to return to the team sooner rather than later.

Rookie Mac Jones and returning backups Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham will also get some extra work with Newton not able to practice right now.

Last season, Newton went 7-8 as a starter, throwing for 2,657 yards with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Without future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady, the Pats were on the outside of the playoffs, looking in for the first time in a long time.

Belichick, Newton and the rest of the team are hopeful that will change in 2021.
