Goodbye, Jason Garrett. Hello, Freddie Kitchens! Giants Make OC Change
There was a time, and not long ago, when it seemed the Dallas Cowboys couldn't get rid of coach Jason Garrett, no matter how loudly Cowboys fans cried.
Now, it's just the opposite. Garrett keeps losing jobs.
His latest gig was as the New York Giants' offensive coordinator. But per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Garrett was fired this morning.
He likely wasn't just fired because of Monday's 30-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers either. As Leonard notes, the Giants' offense has been up and down (mostly down) all season, and quarterback Daniel Jones hasn't exactly made a rapid development. If anything, Jones has taken a step back.
Of course, you can't help but wonder whether the Giants are actually improving anything by having former Cleveland Browns coach Freddie Kitchens take over for Garrett on an interim basis, which reports say is happening. Kitchens couldn't even get Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. on the same page, so his promotion could turn into quite an adventure.
On the other hand, it's hard to believe things could get any worse. Under Garrett, the Giants' offense managed just 18 touchdowns in 10 games, good for third-worst in the NFL. Their 3-7 record isn't exactly near the top either.
Clearly, head coach Joe Judge decided a shakeup made sense. That's nothing new. Last year, Judge canned offensive line coach Marc Columbo at midseason.
So the Giants are handing the offensive coordinator keys to Kitchens, who will try to make something of a team that is averaging 18.9 points and 322.8 yards a game.
But as is often the case in these situations, it's not so much about the coordinators and the coaches as it is about the talent on the field. Garrett is likely just the fall guy and the Giants will probably keep playing as badly as they already are.
This was change for the sake of change, which is something that Cowboys fans once wished for and got. However, it doesn't seem to make much sense for the Giants right now.
