In the last several years, Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht has reached for a kicker...twice. But now he seems to have learned his lesson and swears he won't make that mistake again.
"I won't take a kicker," Licht said.
Seems he's now thinking this thing through, but here's his statement when the team selected kicker Roberto Aguayo in the second round back in 2016. Ya know, just for fun:
"This is the best kicker I've ever seen in college...my favorite kicker. I'm not going to risk not getting him and then have to go through a kicking carousel again during my tenure. I want to get the best kicker. Every position, I want to get the best.
Just three years later, Licht pulled the trigger and selected kicker Matt Gray with the No. 145 overall pick, except this time the pick didn't flop. Gray recently signed a three-year, $12 million extension.
But to be fair to Licht, Tampa has been abysmal at kicker for a long time. My family have been season ticket holders since the early 90s and practically all of them expect every kicker to smolder like the Tampa sun itself. No worries though -- Tom Brady signed in Tampa, so suddenly everything's making sense.
