Urban Meyer Hit With His First NFL Fine

Before he has even gotten the chance to call his first NFL game, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has already received a hefty fine from the NFL.

According to Adam Schefter on Twitter, the NFL assigned a $100K fine to Jacksonville's Urban Meyer. The league also issued fines for San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy related to OTA violations.

The AP reported that Urban's fine stemmed from "violating non-contact rules during team OTAs, specifically in 11-on-11 drills between wide receivers and defensive backs."

Officially signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in January, Meyer’s anticipated return to football is already creating headlines. First, he and the team drafted the highly-anticipated Trevor Lawrence. Then, they brought in former QB Tim Tebow to try out at tight end. Now this fine.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released a statement regarding Urban Meyer's fine:

“We’ve been informed of the fines issued by the league and will accept the NFL discipline as it pertains to a contact violation during practice on June 1. The Jaguars are vigilant about practicing within the CBA rules and will re-emphasize offseason training rules as they relate to contact. We are looking forward to the start of training camp later this month.”

Meyer has a storied college coaching career. He built successful campaigns for Utah, Florida and Ohio State. He and Tebow won a national championship in 2009. He also won a national title at Florida in 2006 and at Ohio State in 2014.

With the added benefit of drafting Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson with the No. 1 overall pick, Meyer’s 2021-2022 season in Jacksonville is already off to a crazy start — with 100,000 reasons to back it.
