Dan Patrick Reveals Big News On CFB Playoff Expansion
If you've been patiently waiting for a 12-team College Football Playoff, listen up. Dan Patrick revealed big news during his Friday morning show where he explained what a source is telling him about changes that are coming to the Playoff system.
"A 12-team College Football Playoff is a go," Patrick told listeners. "But they want to get it done for next season. If it's not approved in December, the Playoff won't be a go with 12 teams until 2025," he explained.
If Patrick's source is correct, we're about to see massive movement out of college presidents, TV networks and the powers at the College Football Playoff who run this project. In June, it was estimated that expanding the Playoff to 12 teams could be worth $1.9 billion annually after TV contracts are signed.
ESPN's current contract pays approximately $470 million to the CFP per season, while ESPN has separate contracts with the Rose, Sugar and Orange bowls that raise the network's total annual payout to $600 million.
The news from Patrick is huge because, in June, fans were told it could take six seasons before a Playoff expansion could happen because of ESPN's current contracts.
“We’re supportive of our partners at the College Football Playoff as they look toward expansion and seek even more opportunities to grow the passion and excitement for the sport and this signature championship event,” ESPN said at the time.
Now it's looking like fans of expansion could get it sooner rather than later.
Buckle up.
