It was a disaster of a night for the Tennessee Titans special teams. You can read about the specifics in a detailed account from OutKick’s Clint Lamb here.
Punter Trevor Daniel had one kicked blocked and returned for a TD. He also shanked the one before, kicking it off the side of his foot sending it only 17 yards away from the Titans endzone. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski leads the league in missed field goal attempts with eight after he missed one from 44 yards last night. As a result, the Titans dropped a 34-17 decision to the Indianapolis Colts, and the teams are now tied atop the AFC South at 6-3.
It’s no surprise that Titans coach Mike Vrabel told reporters it was time to take a serious look at the team’s issues, though he did offer support for special teams coach Craig Aukerman and assistant Ryan Crowe.
“I think we’re going to have to evaluate everything we do. We have to be better in all areas,” Vrabel said. “I have confidence in Craig and Ryan and what they do. We’ll continue to hold people accountable and continue to improve. I thought that those guys, I’m very confident they know what they’re doing. I know what they coach. I’m in those meetings and there at practice. We will just keep working and making sure that we start playing better in that area and performing better.”

A long, long time ago in late October, the Titans and Steelers made history, facing off in Week 6 as the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the league. That almost never happens that late in the season, two teams with 5-0 records matching up against each other.
Since then, the Titans have lost three of four. The Steelers are still undefeated.
This is hardly time to panic. The Titans played their best when it meant the most last season, advancing all the way to the AFC Championship game.
But they can’t expect the same if their special teams continues to be so unreliable. They say they know that, but now let’s see what they do about it.
