The sport of boxing has officially been hijacked by YouTubers and old guys. On Tuesday, Mike Tyson announced that he will return to the ring in September to take on heavyweight legend, Lennox Lewis.
“I’m going to fight Lennox Lewis,’’ Tyson tells TMZ. “September.’’
Azim Spicer, Tyson’s brother-in-law and business partner, however, says the deal is not quite done.
“We are looking into it as a possibility,’’ Spicer said while speaking to USA Today. “Still would need to paper it up, though.’’
I don’t know how good the fight will be, but the build-up promises excellence. In 2002, Lewis knocked Tyson out in the eighth round. That might not mean much this time around, though. Tyson is 54 and Lewis is 55. They are both old, really old.
This bout would be the second fight of the New Era of Mike Tyson. Last November, Tyson returned to the ring for the first time in 15 years to fight Roy Jones Jr., a showdown that ended in a draw. (It’s still boxing — all results are disappointing.)
There were talks that Tyson’s next fight would present a rematch with — wait for it — Evander Holyfield. Those negotiations, however, fell apart over money. Thus, insert Lennox Lewis, another old guy.
Boxing in 2021: Logan Paul, Mike Tyson, Nate Robinson, Roy Jones Jr., and Lennox Lewis. Yep. Hijacked.
