Mike Leach, whose Mississippi State Bulldogs started the year with a historic win at LSU, went on one of his patented press conference rants Monday as he summed up 2020 as “one of the most joyless seasons on earth.”
Leach might’ve felt a different way if, after the LSU win, his team didn’t go on a four-game losing streak before beating winless Vandy and then losing three straight leading into this week’s finale against Missouri.
The protocols that went into having a season became a major talking point during Monday’s Zoom meeting.
“The NFL does it one way, we do it another,” Leach said. “It’s just the stop and start and just the incessant change, adjustment … anytime you get committees involved in something, it’s going to be convoluted and twisted up and then the politicians are trying to beat their chest, and maximize on this at every step. In the end, together with all the commotion and clutter, we’ve created one of the most joyless seasons on earth. And hopefully we have the presence of mind to not repeat it this way again.”

Three months ago, Leach literally stood on top of a Bulldogs bandwagon and offered people the chance to jump on. That was a Monday morning. The coach was on Clay’s show all happy after the win over LSU. At some point that same morning, MSU released the bandwagon video, and the Mississippi State program appeared primed to be the Cinderella team of the SEC West.
Quarterback K.J. Costello had a 623-yard, five-touchdown performance against LSU. He has thrown for one touchdown since and was replaced by Will Rogers, who has seven touchdown passes and six interceptions in seven games.
Winning solves joyless seasons. Somebody needs a trip around the Keys in a pirate ship. Soon.
