Luka Doncic's Waistline Starting To Match His Stat Line

When NBA superstar Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks said "I do" at the 2018 NBA draft, the then-19-year-old Slovenian was as slender as Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. But since marrying the Mavs, Doncic has gone the route of so many other married partners. In other words, he's gotten comfortable.

However, Doncic recognizes that he's no longer in peak honeymoon condition, and he now plans to make some changes.

"I've just got to get back on track," Doncic told media members, referencing his conditioning.

Questions about Doncic's conditioning -- and appetite -- have been front and center for the small forward ever since Dallas' loss to Brooklyn on Tuesday when TNT broadcaster Reggie Miller said, “This is the heaviest I’ve probably ever seen Luka look, right now."

Miller continued: “I know he’s had a long year with the Olympics, but look how he’s plodding up and down. He’s not really running."

Miller wasn't alone in his observation. His TNT partner, play-by-play man Kevin Harlan, agreed, saying, “We’ve done a couple of these Mavs games, and when you’re around the team, what you hear is he’s worn out... My eyes tell me he’s a little heavier.”

For what it's worth, the extra weight and plodding didn't seem to slow Doncic down on Tuesday. The no-longer svelte Slovenian finished the game with 28 points, nine assists and six rebounds. But he still admits that his physique is beginning to match his phat stat line.

"People are going to talk about it, yes or no," Doncic said of the current shape he's in. "But I know I've got to do better. I had a long summer..."

He's far from the first person to couple wedded bliss with chips and Sierra Mist. But unlike the rest of us, Luka at least has a decent excuse for carrying some extra weight into winter.

"I had the Olympics, took three weeks off, and relaxed a little bit. Maybe too much," added Doncic.

Though Dallas surely wouldn't mind seeing Doncic slim down to his pre-courtship weight, it's unlikely they'll be drawing up divorce papers anytime soon. He's averaging more than 25 points, eight rebounds and 8 assists per game and is still just 22 years old.

Besides, as Dallas already knows, everything's bigger in Texas.
