Local Penn State Airport Keeps Adding Destination Dates For Away Games

It is apparently becoming easier for Penn State fans to see their favorite team on the road.

"University Park Airport, which previously announced several limited-time, nonstop flights to new destinations to coincide with Penn State sporting events, officially added another new destination Wednesday — for the Nittany Lions’ Oct. 9 away game at the Iowa Hawkeyes," wrote Josh Moyer of the Centre Daily Times.

Generally, this type of flight would consist of one connection, perhaps more. But this is considered a "special event" flight, and often utilized "sparingly at the small Centre County airport that sees fewer than 200,000 annual passengers," Moyer noted.

Coach James Franklin and the Nittany Lions finished 4-5 last season, though they expect to better this year. They open 2021 at Wisconsin on Saturday, Sept. 4 (noon EST, Fox Sports).

But no matter where the Nittany Lions go, it seems they can easily take their followers along.

"Although local football die-hards probably wouldn’t want to miss the Sept. 18 game against Auburn, those uninterested in sports would still be able to take advantage of at least one new travel destination — namely Atlanta, where locals could still leave State College that Friday and return Sunday via nonstop flights," Moyer wrote.
