Lions Line Up Interview With Ex-Texans GM Rick Smith

Former Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith is expected to interview for the Detroit Lions vacancy before Christmas, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The Lions are seeking a new GM after parting ways with Bob Quinn last month. They fired coach Matt Patricia the same day, and there’s been talk that they could hire a coach who would then help them choose the GM.

For now, though, it appears they are talking solely to GM candidates. So far, per the Free Press, the Lions have talked only with people currently employed by the organization. Smith isn’t employed by anyone, so the Lions could hire him right away.

Along with his work with the Texans, Smith is a former assistant coach with the Denver Broncos and several other clubs. He’s been in the NFL for more than 20 years, but he stepped away in 2017 to help care for his wife, who died of breast cancer last year.

Smith became Texans GM in 2006. He took over a 2-14 team and built it into a regular playoff contender that won four division titles in 12 years.

The Lions are 5-8 following Sunday’s loss to their rivals the Green Bay Packers.

  1. there is no easy way to say this, but i suspect we’ll see in 2021 and beyond, a lot of coaching positions, sports executive positions and other sports positions across sports as a whole filled by so-called minority candidates and women. Instagram Models will some day run sports media.

as this happens nationally for no good reason, except appearances, how will all those others, that might be more qualified, react?

will Troy Aikman provide ‘flowery’ commentary when he talks about the new Black GM of the Dallas Cowboys? oh wait, that will never happen.

What will Arron Andrews say about the first female coach of the Jacksonville Jags? Oh wait, the owner of the Jags is muslim 🙃

Cant’t wait for Shaquille O’neal discussing the first female NBA head coach next year. what team will she coach first, before she is selected to coach a winning team? Steve Kerr managed to pretend he coached the Warriors to championships. why can’t a woman do that too?

Presidential Elections no longer matter, so why would qualifications for a sports job matter.

the new major Sports Mantra is to Elevate anyone you can to a position of percieved meaning and watch what happens to those positions.

  2. He’s a perfect choice for the Lions! I mean, he was absolutely ghastly for the Texans, and the Lions need someone who can reliably continue the culture of cluelessness and outright stupidity in their front office that has been so carefully nurtured these last 10 years or so.
