Let’s Not Overreact to Leonard Fournette on the Bucs

Leonard Fournette announced his intent to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday with an admittedly pretty badass Photoshop:

The Bucs are assembling an offense full of people we’ve Heard Of. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and now-unretired Rob Gronkowski are a coterie of weapons for Tom Brady. Now they’ve added Fournette, who was the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft just three years ago.

Social media has gone wild over the signing, and this is understandable because whether they win or lose the Bucs are going to be absolute must see TV. But let’s pump the brakes on Fournette being a dramatic difference-maker until he proves otherwise.

Last season, Fournette averaged 4.3 yards per carry. 25 running backs averaged higher. Fournette only had three rushing touchdowns. Any team in the league that wanted him could’ve had him for a sixth round pick, but no one obliged.

Maybe Fournette has a renaissance with Bruce Arians and all these weapons around him, or maybe he’s a platoon back with Ronald Jones. The latter feels more likely to me.

  1. As a Jaguars fan with what feels like Stockholm syndrome, Fournette was largely running against 8 guys in the box all year (probably dating back to mid 2018 season). I wish him well and think he will complement the Brady-led offense.

  2. Longtime Bucs fan and I can’t stand Brady (Team Payton). It’s like cool, we get 43 year old Brady to play the role of Captain Save-a-Ho. So excited. Fix the secondary.

Agreed about LF though. So far he hasn’t lived up to the hype but maybe that changes with a new team.

  3. I think the Bucs can do something special this year tons of talent at the positions and BA is an awesome coach had him here in the AZ great guy hated to see him go should be interesting everyone stay healthy.
