Kyle Shanahan Says Santa Clara COVID-19 Restrictions Are ‘Extremely Disappointing’

The San Francisco 49ers are one of many organizations that have been affected by a decision from Santa Clara County. On Saturday, it was announced that Santa Clara would ban contact sports through Dec. 21.

That decision has put the 49ers in a difficult position, as they are now unable to hold practice at their own facilities or play games at their home stadium. The 49ers head coach isn’t happy about the new COVID-19 restrictions either.

On Sunday, Kyle Shanahan commented on finding out about the three-week ban on contact sports. And apparently, the organization wasn’t given a heads up about the decision from county officials.

“It was a very disappointing thing what we got yesterday,” Shanahan said, via Nick Wagoner with ESPN. “For us to be find that out while we’re getting on a plane, it was extremely disappointing.”

It is an understandable reaction.

From what we know, contact sports have not been a problem in the fight to keep COVID-19 under control. So what was the point of the restrictions? It seems unnecessary, and it has left teams like the 49ers and Stanford Cardinal out to dry.

Unfortunately, we now have to sit back and see how teams navigate the new restrictions. And in the meantime, we await the next obstacle those lockdown lovers decide to impose.

Update: 49ers running back Raheem Mostert had an emotional statement regarding the sacrifices players make to play the game during this time.
