The work/life balance subject triggered some serious responses from Screencaps readers

Confirmed: Thursday’s post resonated with you guys. I was on the road yesterday with my dad for our father-son golf trip, and the emails just kept pouring in from around the United States. I have a tee time this morning, so let’s dive into the responses:

• Brian G. writes:

I own and operate a small firm that has been successful beyond my wildest dreams and I have a wife and three daughters, ages 17, 15 and 10. I work hard and play hard. I do a whole bunch of work weeks with 10 to 12 hour days or even more and then me and my wife and my girls have traveled the world and during the pandemic we’ve still been all over the country.

Do you know where I find my personal solitude? Whale watching. I’ve gone to Hawaii during prime humpback season, I’ve gone up to San Juan Islands in Washington to admire orcas, I’ve gone to Alaska deep-sea whale watching, and even hung out with belugas in Canada. Whales are the most beautiful, incredible, and compelling animals on the planet to be around. They are truly a gift from God. Look at this video I took this past February. This was after this beautiful humpback was next to the boat for 15 minutes and I realized I need to be taking whale selfies.

I would urge Ms. Nolan to go with someone or some people special and charter a boat and go whale watching, and then get on a giant whale watching boat with all kinds of families to be around the kids who go crazy with happiness when whales appear. It would be a great start for her.

• Ryan K. in Lakeville, MN shares where he’s been about to find happiness during a very stressful time in his life:

Love your column. Good stuff. I especially loved the column from Oct 7 regarding happiness. When the pandemic started I lost my job due to a spineless employer. My wife and I were expecting our daughter in a few weeks and here we found ourselves with no income all of a sudden (she stays at home with the kids – we have two boys in addition to our daughter). I was gutted and felt like a failure.
After a few months of spending more time with my family than I ever had before, I eventually found a job and have been working from home the majority of the time since. It has been fantastic. I absolutely love being home as much as I have… Fast forward to this past February and my wife was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Every day since then has been stressful as chemo and surgeries and radiation have drained my wife’s ability to take care of us like she used to.
But through the cancer treatment and the job loss I’ve discovered what’s really important to me and what really makes me happy, and that is my wife and my kids. I love spending time with them and struggle with the thought of how close we were to her not being with us.
I also have to give a shout out to the best neighbors I could ever imagine. They’ve all become my best friends and are family to me. We couldn’t have gotten through these struggles without them and our families. The folks closest to me are where I find my comfort and joy.

• Matt W. in Shreveport, LA is one of my kind of guys. I’m convinced patios have special healing powers.

Simply put, getting off from work (I work with special needs students and helping them evolve into the workforce, so I love my job) and coming to my little backyard patio, opening the fridge and cracking open a locally brewed APA beer, pouring it into a frozen pint glass with my favorite koozie—Jackson Hole Annual Crawfish Boil—, kicking my feet up on the table and watching The Five with Jesse & Gutfield or any live sporting event that may be on. Could be better views out there, but for my daily happiness—that’s it.

• Aaron H. writes:

Work: I’m pro sales at Home Depot, and I get genuine joy from helping contractors save money and benefit from the wealth of my experience.
Life: I moved from the beach back to Kentucky to help my Mother thru chemo. I’m a 53-yo living with Mom, doing laundry, dog walking, cleaning and shopping. It’s a grind but I don’t care. Binging prime every night and making up for lost time.

• While it wasn’t an email directed straight at the Katie Nolan work/life balance topic, Jeff B. wrote something I think you guys will really enjoy.
I love the content you put out on a daily basis and love seeing and hearing what the Screencaps family is up to all across this wonderful country of ours. Screencaps readers seem to appreciate the simple things in life and take joy in what they have as opposed to living miserably chasing after what someone else tells them they should want. Most of what we really need is actually close by.

My grandfather was a man who understood this. When his first grandchildren came along in the late ’70’s he pulled some junk from around his shop to make something that they would enjoy on his five acres in Memphis, TN. What came out would simply be called “The Little Red Car”. Using an old riding lawnmower frame and a little ingenuity he made us a gasoline powered car that I thought put all the “Power Wheels” kids to shame. Adjustable throttle, low and high gear, and of course reverse. All we needed was someone to give it a yank to get it started.

My family moved to Charleston, SC in 1986 and my cousins all grew up. My grandfather died years later, and my grandmother years after that. When my grandparent’s house was being cleaned out I knew there was something collecting dust in the garage that I wanted. I brought the Little Red Car back to SC. I asked my dad if I should break the early 1960’s Briggs&Stratton engine down, “Nah, just put a new spark plug in and crank it”. Runs like a champ.

I’m sure my grandfather would get a kick out of knowing an entirely new generation of kids will enjoy what he made even though they never met him. Sometimes it’s the simple things like this that that bind people together in ways we’d never imagine.

“My brother-in-law and his boy. Yes, that is a glass of white wine in his hand. Some people can’t be helped,” Jeff B. writes

• Chris B. is definitely our eyes and ears on so much of what goes on in Texas. I knew the great people of Texas were huge supporters, but I didn’t know we’re spreading this fast. Which one of you TNML members was at the bar last night watching the Astros?

I skipped outta work to watch the Astros. The random guy in the barstool next to me… is wearing a TNML teeshirt.

You’re everywhere!

• Bill C. would like to address what he calls the Kinsey Bump.

I thoroughly enjoy your content that you continue to put out there.  I think that you need to enlist some statistical genius out there to do some analysis.  I have noticed, maybe just an anomaly, some increase in subscribers/followers of accounts featured in your articles.  Could this be a coincidence?  I think not.  I believe this can be directly tied to what I am calling the “Kinsey Bump”.

As you will likely not be able to see this when featuring an instagram account with 400K+ followers.  But I definitely think we are seeing this with the accounts that have 10K – 50K followers.  Just something to think about.  Keep up the great work.

• I’ll say this — we’re noticing a massive daily surge in traffic for Screencaps. People get here, figure out this post is what they needed in their lives and they have to tell their friends. And it grows and grows.

At the end of the day, the success of this post comes down to the daily readers who make this such a joy to do on a daily basis.

Now, I’m off to make a tee time with my father who uttered, “This is awesome” approximately 20 minutes into our Thursday golf session here at Treetops in Gaylord, MI. The fall foliage is at peak or near peak. It’s absolutely beautiful up here right now, and I plan on sucking down as much Pure Michigan as possible the next two days.

Have a great weekend and remember that as long as I have WiFi, there will be Saturday and Sunday screencaps.
