Julio Jones And Shannon Sharpe Getting Slammed Over Comments Made During Live Call-In On FS1

Monday’s back and forth between former NFL Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe and current Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is still the talk of the league a few days later.

Now there could be a stiff price to pay for the chatter between the two.

During the conversation, which aired live on FS1’s Undisputed, Jones spoke about his situation with the team that drafted him ten years ago, the Atlanta Falcons.

“I’m out of there,” Jones said about Atlanta, a city that has been the home for Jones the last 10 seasons since he was the 11th pick in the first round in 2011.

FrontOfficeSports.com reports that staffers Michael McCarthy and A.J. Perez say that Atlanta is not happy at all about the conversation.

The site reports that it’s a “massive stink bomb.”

The chat does nothing to get Jones back on the happy train and back in the good graces of the team. Instead, it undermines any deals the Falcons, who are in desperate need of more cap space, try and land. Right now, Jones is set to make a massive $15 million in 2021, an amount they simply cannot afford.

“It’s become a huge deal,” an unnamed source told the publication.

It sounds like both Jones and Sharpe could be in some pretty big trouble for their mess-up. Jones will probably say that he didn’t know he was being recorded, and rightfully so.

He’s not wrong in that regard, BUT he’s also got to be more responsible for being on the air ANYWHERE, especially when you say you’re leaving the team you are with.

  1. I’m not following why a man set to take in $15mil this year should apologize to some suits in the front office and kiss their rings.
What retribution goes against him for this late in his career for speaking this candidly. Julio has a public persona of being a quality person the fans love to support.

  2. This has nothing to do with apologizing or hurting anyone’s feelings. This has to do with money. The conversation between Julio and Shannon will undoubtedly have negative consequences for Atlanta in terms of negotiating to either get Julio out of Atlanta or keep him around. I think Matt makes that pretty clear.

Depending on what Julio’s contract currently says in terms of disclosure, non-compete, etc., Atlanta may have a claim against him. In turn, listening to the conversation again, it does seem like Julio was not aware he was on air or being recorded. It seems like he was just answering a phone call from his uncle and shooting the shit. Not sure what is true, but he has a good argument IMO nonetheless. This means the brunt of this could fall on Shannon/Undisputed. Shannon pretty much duped Julio into this conversation, or at least a strong argument could be made here. Depending on how devastating of an effect this could have on Julio’s contract, trade options, etc. (potentially millions), Atlanta may have decent action against both of these guys. Julio could also counter against Shannon/Undisputed if it wreck’s him. Will be interesting to see how it turns out or if a settlement is made behind closed doors.

  3. The bottom line here is it was messed up what Shannon did. If I’m an athlete now and I see a call coming from him, he gets the FU button. Anyone dumb enough to still give this dude credibility deserves whatever heat they may get.
