Jim Schwartz Joining Titans Staff, Though Not In Traditional Role

The Tennessee Titans are plenty familiar with Jim Schwartz. He spent a decade with the franchise from 1999-2008, including eight seasons as the defensive coordinator. Now it looks like he might be back in Nashville, at least in some capacity.

Originally, Brett Dougherty with 104.5 The Zone in Nashville reported that Schwartz would join the Titans as a senior assistant. That doesn't appear to be the case, however -- at least not right now.

OutKick 360 co-host Paul Kuharsky, who has covered the team for many years, is reporting something different. He says that Schwartz is doing some work for the Titans, but not as a traditional assistant.

Kuharsky says it's more of a consultant type of job that entails a only few days a week. That falls more in line with previous rumors that Schwartz wanted to take the year off after letting his contract with the Philadelphia Eagles expire.

Even in a consulting role, Schwartz brings valuable knowledge and experience back to Tennessee. For the past twenty years, he has either been a head coach or a defensive coordinator in the NFL, and that experience will be useful for a Titans defense that lacked effectiveness and consistency in 2020.

This might ease the concerns of fans -- at least somewhat -- after head coach Mike Vrabel elevated Shane Bowen to defensive coordinator. Bowen was previously the outside linebackers coach, and his promotion hasn't been very popular with the Titans faithful.
