Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Baez has his eyes on the New York Mets as the July 30 deadline approaches and he is set to hit free agency after the season.
“If I go to the free agency, I would like to play with Francisco Lindor,” Baez said during an interview with Mega 106.9 FM. “I loved playing with him in the World (Baseball) Classic. It is the only option I would take to play second base if it is to play with him, otherwise I stay playing at shortstop.”
Earlier this month, OutKick’s Gary Sheffield, Jr. reported that it shouldn’t be a surprise that teams are calling Kris Bryant, Javy Baez, and likely All-Star catcher Wilson Contreras ahead of the deadline.
“Chicago has some real pieces who can help a contender, and it remains to be seen how aggressive Jed Hoyer will be on his asking prices,” Sheffield Jr. said. “If last year’s dealing of future Hall of Famer Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals for free is any indication, Cubs fans should duck for cover.”
Lindor is currently out and expected to return in August, but if the Mets were to trade for Baez now and/or sign him after the season, the ability to play him at second base would allow the Mets to form a dynamic double-play combo while playing Jeff McNeil at third base and Pete Alonso at first base.
